WORKSHOP - Keep Your Players Hooked! w/ Geoff Gander (sign-up in advance)
A good roleplaying adventure is an interactive story, and what keeps a reader turning the pages is often similar to what keeps your players coming back to the gaming table. Join published fiction and game author Geoff Gander (Sentinel Hill Press, Fat Goblin Games, and others) as he walks you through the structure of a good adventure storyline, and shares the tips and tricks to turn your module from a one-shot into an immersive mini-setting! Participants will also have the opportunity to work with Geoff one-on-one for an hour (time to be negotiated) after the workshop to further develop their projects.

WORKSHOP - Diving Into Fantasy Locations w/ Derek Newman-Stille (sign-up in advance)
In this workshop we will delve into new environments, explore geographies and the ways that they shape characters and also the way that we shape our environments. We will explore extreme locations on our own planet and imagine possibilities for how these environments can shape characters and the way people behave and interact with their world. We will look at different architectural features and think about how the spaces we live in not only reflect us, but also shape us, and by doing so, we will think about how our characters are shaped by the architecture they live in and with. This workshop will be particularly helpful for thinking about setting, but will also explore the way that setting impacts character development and plot.

Seeing real suffering mirrored in fiction can be deeply traumatic or hurtful, even driving audience members away from pieces altogether. Gender in Spec Fiction
Speculative fiction (particularly sci fi and fantasy) gives us opportunities to explore gender in a lot of new ways, particularly outside the binary. As this seems to be more common, are these explorations of new gender systems truly revolutionary, or do they merely reinforce new gender norms? (E.g. worlds with non-binary genders are super cool, but if people are still assigned to a gender, do trans people still exist?) Do these stories even need to be revolutionary?

There’s a whole category of science fiction and fantasy that centers on politics (like Game of Thrones) or incorporates political maneuvering heavily (like Battlestar Galactica or Babylon 5). When To Tweet and When To Flip The Bird
As artists, we've all heard that it's important to be visible online and to engage with the latest trends and discussions on social media. Crafting a public persona is a big part of making art in 2019, but what you gain in followers, you might sacrifice in mental health. In this panel, established authors will discuss the ups and downs of maintaining mental health while on social media: when to respond (or not), how to balance being a creator and an activist (or not), and how to practice self-care (or... actually self-care is always important).

What are the consequences of creating fan works without interacting with the wider community? Can they be created by anyone, or always by the fans, for the fans?

Hijacking YA
Crossover appeal aside, most YA fiction is written primarily with young adults in mind – but is that changing? Within an already ambiguously defined genre, how might the interest of adult readers in YA affect the genre? Is there enough of a readership to motivate authors or publishers to create YA aimed at adults, and what are the ethics of adult-aimed fiction occupying a space nominally dedicated to teens? Is it ultimately necessary to draw a line between the two, or is this transformation all part of YA's very own coming-of-age story?

Who's Our Hero, Anyway?
Why have one protagonist when you can have a dozen - or none? These days, SFF with loads of characters and no designated hero have a certain appeal. Series like Malazan, A Song of Ice and Fire, and The Walking Dead comics offer fans plenty of options to love, and real danger for your faves. But they also run the risk of a meandering plot and a death-weary audience. What are the benefits of having so much choice in who to root for? Does having tons of characters set us up for disappointment, or is it ultimately the reason we keep turning the page?

An Expanse of Political Discourse
Even more than protomolecules and space marines, 'The Expanse' is primarily about many of the political issues we grapple with today: colonialism, discrimination, classism, and militarization. Using imaginary societies to explore contemporary questions is obviously a long tradition in SFF and horror, but if we create a future world with so many of the same issues faced by our own society, are we also making a statement about humanity's ability to progress? Do we risk trivializing the real-world problems of today by mapping them onto parts of an imagined world? Or, is this a positive source of potential activism?

All Good Things Must Come to An End
When it comes to a long-running SFF series, few things are more divisive than its grand finale. Mass Effect, the Avengers, and Game of Thrones all went out with a controversial bang. After all that anticipation, is there a way to make sure the fans are satisfied, rather than disappointed? And considering Rise of Skywalker is next on the roster, what's the best way to give a good story the ending it deserves?

Dungeons and Dramas: Telling a Story in Tabletop Gaming
Tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and Fate grow in popularity every year, and with shows like The Adventure Zone and Critical Role, the use of them as a method of storytelling is gaining in popularity as well. What storytelling opportunities does this collaborative, chance-based media provide –for experimentation, networking, and maybe even money? What needs to be considered, both as a DM/GM, and as a player? How can we craft a compelling story while still trying to play a fun game, and being tied to the whims of the dice?

Writing and Resistance
We’re inundated today with political news and commentary, and many creators today seem to feed that directly into their work, from the subtle messaging about race and politics in Brooklyn Nine-Nine or the direct, oppositional commentary in The Good Fight. How important are creators as political or social commentators – should we even be part of it? Does a work need to balance overt commentary with being entertaining and engaging, or can it just be the former? And is creative work becoming too infused with political commentary?

Back to the Future is a Bunch of Bull
... and time travel is famously very hard to write! And yet, stories crafted around the premise of time travel and time manipulation continue to abound. What is it about stories that break the rules of linear time that has such enduring appeal for writers, and for readers? Are there stories that cannot be told in any other way, are we determined to defy the pronouncements from physicists that such things are impossible, or do we really just want to hang out with Mozart?

The Ace of Possibilities
Time and again in speculative fiction, sex is portrayed as a universal definition of the human experience, but in reality that's not the case for everyone. How has asexuality been treated in speculative fiction? What authors are writing from an asexual perspective today? In a future world where advanced reproductive technologies exist, should sex even be a thing anymore?

Launch of Nothing Without Us
Join us for the launch of the Nothing Without Us anthology! Meet the authors, get your book signed, win some fabulous door prizes, and eat a bite at a great spot two doors down from Can-Con, come back in time for the Auroras!

We are the heroes, not the sidekicks.

“Can you recommend fiction that has main characters who are like us?” This is a question we who are disabled, Deaf, neurodiverse, Spoonie, and/or who manage mental illness ask way too often. Typically, we’re faced with stories about us crafted by people who really don’t get us. We’re turned into pathetic, tragic souls; we merely exist to inspire the abled main characters to thrive; or even worse, we’re to overcome “what’s wrong with us” and be cured.

Nothing Without Us combines both realistic and speculative fiction, starring protagonists who are written “by us and for us.” From hospital halls to jungle villages, from within the fantastical plane to deep into outer space, our heroes take us on a journey, make us think, and prompt us to cheer them on.

These are bold tales, told in our voices, which are important for everyone to experience.

Watch a trailer for the book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7HLM6Vk0Ec

ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION: Please note that the elevator to access the second floor where this event is held is not readily obvious when you walk into the 3 Brewers Pub. The Realness of Fabulism
Arguably the most literary of fantasy genres, fabulism comes with its own challenges and pitfalls. How do you craft a world where the magic is subtle and undefined, but still stands out as “magic”? Does it need to, or can the sense of wonder include never knowing the “realness” of that magic? How does an author balance between too much and too little in the way of rules of magic when writing fabulism?

"SuperCrip": Disabling Comics
Comics have often profited from displaying disabled characters, but often do so problematically. Figures like Daredevil, Echo, and Professor X present disability as something to be overcome, something that is secondary to another power. Disability is often presented in an ableist way in comics, but comics can also provide a space for expression and imagining the disabled experience. This panel explores the nuances of representing disability in comics, what works are challenging assumptions, and how the power of the comic industry to rethink disability.

Body Positivity is Slim Pickings
Fiction has come a long way in its portrayal of (some) minority groups, and so has the idea of acceptable targets. Yet fatness is still too often seen as undesirable at best, and downright proof of villainy at worst. While some fat villains have been reclaimed as fat icons, what can be done to dismantle fatphobia on a worldbuilding level? What are the challenges that come from portraying fat positivity across all genders, races, and abilities?

Everything in the Past is Made Up
The best works of historical fiction are lauded for their authenticity and the meticulous research that underpins them. But historians increasingly understand that our understanding of the past relies on our own concerns, interests and priorities: the Victorian world looks very different to a 21st century historian than it did to one in the 1950s! Does this mean that all our versions of the past are imaginary, and therefore that all historical fiction is, inherently, speculative fiction? What is the difference between historical fiction and historical fantasy, if there is a meaningful distinction to be made?

Criticizing Criticism
In a world of Amazon and Goodreads reviews, is there a still a need and a place for the professional critic? Have critics been failing to keep pace with new technology and changes in how writing about writing is consumed, or has the craft become lost between the academic and the popular? How can critics and book reviewers reclaim the trust and attention of readers? In a world of algorithms and '5 stars!', what is it that critical writers bring to the table that can't be crowdsourced?

However, it also walks a fine line between centering the experiences of disabled people, and exploiting them for drama. How can we use these types of stories for a good scare, while also respecting the daily struggles of real people? Even better, how can we design them as vehicles for empowerment?

Old Punk and New Punk
Cyberpunk made hacking and computer advances attractive and intriguing, suggesting a sometimes dark, transhumanist future. Today, solarpunk attempts to subvert that vision through sustainability and environmentalism. Is one on the path to replace the other? Does the popularity of new creations like Cyberpunk 2077 prove that cyberpunk is still thriving? How do the two genres overlap, and how can they work together to envision different futures?

Mental Health and Comics
Many of our comics use mental health as a plot device, creating characters whose mental health is related to their abilities, powers, and sense of self. Figures like Alpha Flight’s Aurora express Dissociative Identity Disorder as a way to divide between mutant and human. Characters like Legion and Crazy Jane experience Dissociative Identity Disorder and each personality has a different power. It’s time for us to look at these portrayals of mental health and question why we are still using mental illness as a plot device.

Ideas related to oppression and treatment of marginalized communities are common in science fiction and fantasy today, and a reflection of ongoing societal concerns.
