Mental Health and Comics

Log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Many of our comics use mental health as a plot device, creating characters whose mental health is related to their abilities, powers, and sense of self. Figures like Alpha Flight’s Aurora express Dissociative Identity Disorder as a way to divide between mutant and human. Characters like Legion and Crazy Jane experience Dissociative Identity Disorder and each personality has a different power. It’s time for us to look at these portrayals of mental health and question why we are still using mental illness as a plot device.
