The best works of historical fiction are lauded for their authenticity and the meticulous research that underpins them. But historians increasingly understand that our understanding of the past relies on our own concerns, interests and priorities: the Victorian world looks very different to a 21st century historian than it did to one in the 1950s! Does this mean that all our versions of the past are imaginary, and therefore that all historical fiction is, inherently, speculative fiction? What is the difference between historical fiction and historical fantasy, if there is a meaningful distinction to be made?
