Gender in Spec Fiction

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Speculative fiction (particularly sci fi and fantasy) gives us opportunities to explore gender in a lot of new ways, particularly outside the binary. As this seems to be more common, are these explorations of new gender systems truly revolutionary, or do they merely reinforce new gender norms? (E.g. worlds with non-binary genders are super cool, but if people are still assigned to a gender, do trans people still exist?) Do these stories even need to be revolutionary?
