Seeing real suffering mirrored in fiction can be deeply traumatic or hurtful, even driving audience members away from pieces altogether. However, properly represented, depictions of trauma and fears can be reparative, even transformative. With the potential to both destroy and heal, what responsibilities do writers have in depicting true-to-life traumatic events and anxiety-provoking scenarios? And how do readers negotiate this area?
